The Science Behind Shrink Ratio: Why It Matters In Shrink Films

    Shrink-ratio-in-shrink-films

Shrink ratio is the percentage by which a shrink film contracts in machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD) when heat is applied. Shrink films or shrink wrap rolls are versatile packaging materials used across different industries; From food & beverages, electronics, to cosmetics packaging. One of the main things to consider in shrink films is the shrink ratio. In this blog, we break down what is shrink ratio and why it matters in your packaging operations.

    What is Shrink Ratio?

The shrink ratio of a shrink film refers to the percentage by which a film contracts from its original dimensions when heat is applied. It is typically expressed as a ratio across two axes.

    • Machine Direction (MD): The direction in which the film travels through the heat tunnel (lengthwise)
    • Transverse Direction (TD): The direction perpendicular to film travel (widthwise)

For instance, you buy a PE shrink film from a shrink film manufacturer in India with a shrink ratio 20% MD and 40%. This implies the film will shrink 40% in length and 40% in width when exposed to the correct heat level. The total volume contraction creates a tight, conforming wrap that gives shrink packaging its distinctive finish.

Example: A 500mm wide film that shrinks to 300mm has undergone a 40% transverse shrinkage.

It is important to understand that the shrink ratio value is not a fixed universal value. It varies by film material, manufacturing process and heat level applied. Understanding how your film behaves at specific temperatures is the foundation of good shrink packaging.

The Science Behind Shrink Ratio: Why the Film Shrinks

To understand the science behind shrink ratio, one needs to understand what happens to PE at the molecular level during manufacturing, and what happens again when heat is reapplied.

    Step 1: Orientation During Manufacturing

When the shrink film manufacturers in India produce PE shrink film, it is extruded either in a molten state and then stretched either in one direction (monoxially oriented) or in both directions (biaxially oriented). All this while the polymer chains are still mobile. As the film cools and solidifies, the polymer chains are locked in this stretched and oriented state. In this way, mechanical stress is stored; the chains can return to their natural coil, but this is not possible without energy input.

Step 2: Heat Releases Stored Stress

When the film passes through a heat tunnel during packaging, the thermal energy raises polymer chains above the threshold temperature. At this point, the stored mechanical stress is released, and the chains relax. This causes the film to contract back towards its pre-stretched dimension. This is called shrinkage. Shrink ratio is engineered into film during manufacturing. This is why specifying the correct ratio when you source from shrink film suppliers in India is critical.

What Shrink Ratio is Right for Your Application?

There is no single correct shrink ratio for all applications. The right specification depends on several factors:

    • Product shape: Regular (box, cylinder) or irregular?
    • Product weight & Fragility: Heavier loads need a higher shrink force alongside appropriate thickness.
    • Packaging Machine Type: L-bar sealers, centrefold machines and sleeve wrappers. (Each of the machines interacts differently with the shrink ratio)
    • Heat Tunnel Specifications: Operating temperature range, belt speed & airflow volume.
    • End-use Environment: Retail shelf display, transit/warehouse bundling or cold storage.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Shrink ratio is the percentage reduction in film dimensions when heat is applied, measured in machine direction (MD) and transverse direction (TD).

It ensures proper fit, product protection, and visual appeal while preventing film damage or loose wrapping.

     It depends on application:

    • 20–30% for retail packaging
    • 30–50% for beverages
    • 15–20% for pallet loads
