Butter Paper vs. Wax Paper: Which is Better for Your Food Business?
If you run a bakery, a cloud kitchen, a sweet shop, or a food packaging operation, wax paper, butter paper or both are important packaging materials. Both wax and butter paper are visually identical, translucent, thin, flexible and have similar applications. However, the difference between butter paper and wax paper lies in their properties, their coatings and applications. In this guide explores these food packing papers and where they perform the best.
What Extactly is Butter Paper (Parchment Paper)?
Butter paper, also called parchment paper, is a cellulose-based food-wrapping paper that undergoes a special manufacturing process. The butter paper manufacturers in India produce modern butter paper that is treated with food-grade silicone on one or both sides. It is non-stick, grease-proof and critically heat-resistant up to approximately 220 to 230-degree celsius.
Key Features of Butter Paper (Parchment Paper/Baking Paper)
| Coating | Food-grade (silicone) |
| Base | Parchmentised |
| Heat | Oven-safe up to 220-230 °C. |
| Non-stick | Yes-excellent release |
| Grease-proof | Yes- blocks oil & moisture |
| Moisture | Resistant to both |
| Odour | Odourless- food-safe |
| Colour | White or unbleached brown |
What Extactly is Wax Paper?
Wax paper is a tissue or a kraft-grade paper coated on one or both sides with a thin layer of food-grade paraffin wax or sometimes soybean-based wax. This wax coating makes the paper moisture-resistant and gives it a non-stick quality for cold or room-temperature food contact. One of the main limitations of wax paper is that when exposed to heat, it melts. The paraffin wax coating melts, smokes and can transfer into your food. It is not oven-safe, nor cooking-safe and not suitable for applications involving heat.
Key Features of Wax Paper
| Coating | Food-grade paraffin or soybean wax |
| Base | Tissue or kraft paper |
| Heat | Not oven-safe, wax melts above 60°C. |
| Non-stick | Yes, for cold or room temperature |
| Grease-proof | Moderate for light wrapping |
| Moisture | Good moisture barrier (cold use) |
| Odour | Slight waxy scent possible |
| Colour | Translucent white or off-white |
Which Paper Should Your Business Use?
| Property | Butter Paper | Wax Paper |
| Heat Resistance | Excellent-safe up to 220–230°C | Non-wax melts at low temperatures; never use in oven |
| Oven/baking safe? | Yes- the #1 choice for baking | No- will smoke, melt or ignite |
| Non-stick Performance | Superior- silicone coating offers premium release even at high heat | Adequate- works for cold food; loses non-stick at heat |
| Grease/oil Resistance | Excellent- no grease bleed-through | Moderate- some resistance; may allow bleed-through over time |
| Moisture Resistance | Good- resists moisture from food | Good- effective for cold, moist food |
| Food Contact Safety | High- food-grade silicone, widely certified | Good- effective for cold, moist foods |
| Reusability | Limited- can be reused for dry items, 2-3 times if clean | Single use |
| Freezer | Yes | Yes |
| Microwave Safe | Yes | No |
| Best for Wrapping | All food types- hot & cold | Cold food, confectionery |
