How to Read an Aluminum Foil Specification Sheet: Alloy, Temper, Micron & Width Decoded for Bulk Buyers

    aluminum-foil-specification-sheet

When you buy aluminium foil in bulk, you are not just placing an order; you are buying to a defined technical specification. A foil specification sheet may include terms such as alloy, temper, micron, width, and length, which can seem confusing at first. However, each specification affects the foil’s strength, flexibility, performance, and suitability for your application. Understanding these specifications helps bulk buyers place accurate orders, compare suppliers on the same basis, and avoid costly specification errors. This guide explains the key terms you are likely to find on an aluminium foil specification sheet and what they mean for your purchase.

Why the Aluminum Foil Specification Sheet Matters

For a bulk buyer, the specification sheet is more than just a document; it tells you exactly what you are paying for. The right specifications by aluminium foil manufacturers in USA ensure the foil performs reliably, fits your equipment, and suits your application at the expected cost. The wrong specifications can result in foil that is too thin, too weak, incorrectly sized, or unsuitable for the intended use, creating significant losses at bulk volumes.

    1. Alloy: What Numbers Mean

The alloy is usually listed as a four-digit number, such as 1235 or 8011. It identifies the type of aluminium used and influences properties such as strength, flexibility, formability, and surface appearance. Some of the most commonly used aluminium foil alloys include:

➤ 1xxx Series (Such as 1235 and 1145): These contain very high-purity aluminium and are generally soft, flexible, and easy to form, making them suitable for household foil, flexible packaging, and laminates.

➤ 8xxx Series (Such as 8011 and 8079): These are widely used for aluminium foil because they provide a good balance of strength, flexibility, and formability. They are commonly used in food packaging, containers, laminates, and pharmaceutical foil.

In simple terms, the alloy helps determine how the foil behaves during use and processing. For many food and flexible packaging applications, 8011 and 1235 are commonly specified options.

    2. Temper: How Soft or Hard the Foil Is

Temper describes the mechanical condition of the foil; in simple terms, how soft, flexible, or hard it is. It is usually shown using a combination of letters and numbers, which indicate how the foil has been processed and its resulting mechanical properties.

➤ O Temper (Soft or Annealed): This is the softest and most flexible condition. It bends, folds, and wraps easily, making it suitable for household foil, food wrapping, and lamination.

➤ H Tempers (Such as H14, H18, H22, and H24): These are harder and stronger because the foil has been strain-hardened. In general, higher H numbers indicate greater hardness and stiffness. These tempers are commonly used for semi-rigid applications such as foil containers.

    3. Micron: Thickness & What It Controls

Micron (µm) refers to the thickness of the aluminium foil. It is one of the most important specifications because thickness directly affects the foil’s strength, barrier performance, flexibility, and cost.

➤ Thinner Foil (Around 9–12 Microns): Lightweight, flexible, and economical, making it suitable for household wrapping, flexible packaging, and lamination.

➤ Medium Thickness (Around 12–20 Microns): It offers a balance of flexibility, strength, and barrier performance, making it suitable for applications such as food and pharmaceutical packaging.

➤ Thicker Foil (30 Microns and Above): Provides greater strength and durability, making it suitable for containers and more demanding applications that require additional protection.

    4. Width: Getting the Right Fit

Width is the measurement across the foil roll, usually specified in millimetres (mm). For bulk buyers, getting the width right matters because the foil must fit your packing or wrapping requirements. The aluminium foil suppliers in India offer foils in jumbo rolls and custom sizes. When reviewing a specification sheet, also check the core diameter, roll length, and roll weight to ensure the rolls meet your quantity requirements.
